5 Ways to Warm Your Students Up for Rehearsal

A consistent warm-up routine builds focus and community, prevents injury, strengthens voices and bodies, and helps students shift from “school day mode” into “rehearsal mode.” If you don’t already have a go-to routine, here’s a simple framework:

Four kids stand in front of a green chalkboard. One gives a thumbs-up, one wears a "FEARLESS" shirt. All look cheerful and confident.

1. Get the Blood Flowing

  • Jumping jacks

  • Jog in a circle

  • High knees

2. Stretch

  • Reach arms up (inhale), release down (exhale)

  • Slow head rolls right and left

  • Touch toes and roll up slowly, one vertebra at a time

  • Lunges (both hips)

  • Pliés (bend at the knees to stretch calves, thighs, and hips)

3. Vocalize

  • Lip trills

  • Scales

  • Sirens

4. Articulate

  • Tongue twisters

  • Practice lines with a pencil between the teeth

  • Over-enunciate (even try the ABCs)

5. Pray Together

  • Invite a different student to lead each rehearsal

  • Model it yourself in the early rehearsals

Each 10-15 minute warm-up may seem insignificant at the moment, but these are opportunities for life changing spiritual formation. As Paul points out, in 1 Corinthians 9:25-27 –

“Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others, I myself should be disqualified.”

This daily self-control in rehearsal warmups will not only sharpen your students' performance skills, but  it will – most importantly – deepen their faith as they participate in God’s design for our discipline and flourishing.
