Time to Reflect

The spring musical is behind us.
The curtain is closing on the school year.
What do we do now as summer approaches?
In our culture that screams, “GO GO GO GO,” we often skip the opportunity to pause and reflect. We miss the chance to ponder our recent experiences, how those experiences have affected us and the people around us, and what God has to say to us about all of it.
New habits have been developed — both good and bad.
Skills have been honed — both new and old.
And we’re all excited for what the Lord has in store for us next!
Here are some practical ways to encourage your students to reflect on this year:

Journaling
Take 30 minutes of class time and ask your students to journal about the year they’ve just had.
Give them some prompts to choose from:
“What was your favorite song in the spring show, and why?”
“Where did you see God at work in your life this year?”
“Is there anything you’ve prayed for that has recently been answered?”
“Were there any themes in the stories you told this year that impacted your faith?”
Classroom Discussion
Take 30 minutes to invite your students to share their answers with the class. Encourage them to leave room for others to speak. Have an answer of your own ready to share first to set the tone. Remind your students that they can be as vulnerable as they feel comfortable being. Silly and lighthearted answers are okay too!
A prompt for this might be: “What was the most hilarious moment that happened onstage this year?”

Prayer
You can say a prayer for all of your students to close out the class time. You can ask for a student volunteer to pray. You can have a group of students pray for different areas — one student can thank the Lord for all that has come to pass, while another thanks Him for all that He has in store.
Depending on the class size, you can have students stand in a circle and pray for the person on their right.
You know your students best, so you are best equipped to gauge which approach will benefit them most. You could even ask them what they would prefer. If the room goes crazy with differing opinions, you can always overrule.

This reflection time with your students is valuable. Processing is a vital component of growth. The Lord has used each moment this year to shape each one of us into His character. Our team at Faith Based Student Musicals is reflecting right along with you. And we are praying for the Lord to bless the Kingdom investments that you’ve poured into your students this year. Thank you for all that you do!
